The Prophets by Robert Jones Jr. My rating: 5 of 5 stars This is a deeply moving story of love, power and betrayal set in the deep south pre-civil war. The atrocities of plantation life juxtaposed with the beauty of the love shared by two young enslaved men was stunning. Powerful writing about life in and around a place called Empty. Floret Farm's Discovering Dahlias: A Guide to Growing and Arranging Magnificent Blooms by Erin Benzakein My rating: 5 of 5 stars Absolutely stunning and comprehensive guide to dahlias. So many varieties to consider growing and much information on how to grow them well. The photography in the book is gorgeous. I found the information on arranging the flowers very interesting and useful. Now, if only the snow would melt so I can plant. Definitely ordering some dahlias! View all my reviews
The Children's Blizzard by Melanie Benjamin My rating: 3 of 5 stars Over 133 years ago a devastating blizzard hit the Midwestern prairies. This story is how two sisters made different decisions and how the consequences of their decision affected them and the community for the rest of their lives. This is a compelling story however I did not find myself connecting with any of the characters and therefore the book lost its enjoyment for me. View all my reviews

The Genome Odyssey: The Promise of Precision Medicine to Define, Detect, and Defeat Disease by Euan Angus Ashley My rating: 4 of 5 stars Fascinating look into the genome project. Interesting to learn the DNA we all carry can be sequenced and can be used to understand, diagnose and treat ailments that we carry. It was interesting to read how how Dr. Ashley's team was the first team to interpret a full human genome on patient zero. Individual patient stories were very interesting to me. The Undiagnosed Diseases Program which does research of previously unknown genetic abnormalities is one result of the genome sequencing project. The development of the genome sequencing allows for research of previously unknown genetic abnormalities. So much is possible by the decoding of our genetics. This is a very readable and interesting book about some of the wonders of medicine and scientific breakthroughs. This would be a very interesting book for anyone interested in medicine and science. ...
