Joan Is OkayJoan Is Okay by Weike Wang
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

If asked to describe Joan the first thing that comes to mind is Asperger's Syndrome. Combine that with culture differences and family expectations, and you can understand why Joan's life may not look like everyone else's.
I had a hard time warming up to Joan but do believe that she was indeed okay.

The Prophets by Robert Jones Jr. My rating: 5 of 5 stars This is a deeply moving story of love, power and betrayal set in the deep south pre-civil war. The atrocities of plantation life juxtaposed with the beauty of the love shared by two young enslaved men was stunning. Powerful writing about life in and around a place called Empty.
